Well, we were totally surprised to see Yuzuru Hanyu / 羽生 結弦 back at The Cricket Club, the home rink of his former long-term coach Brian Orser. But it’s been wonderful to see all the amazing photos and lovely interactions between Yuzuru and the current skaters at the Canadian figure skating club. He really does generate huge excitement wherever he goes!
While there, he also took time to lead edge classes and take lots of photos with other skaters and fans including Corey Circelli, Ayça Özçirpici and Matthew Markell (*see photos below).
We wonder what other interesting news might come out of this visit? Is he in Canada negotiating show deals? Is he about to enter the realm of figure skating coaching? Only time will tell… But we’ll keep you updated as we learn more!
Yuzuru’s ‘Gift’ ice show was recently streamed worldwide by Disney+ and received rave reviews while another of his shows, Notte Stellata, took place on several dates in March to commemorate the 12th anniversary of the Great East Japan Earthquake, which devastated Hanyu’s hometown of Sendai in Miyagi Prefecture. He also skated in Stars on Ice with lots of other big figure skating names Mai Miyahara, Ilia Malinin, Isabeau Levito and Jason Brown.
It’s nice to see Yuzuru take some time out for travel (and possibly more work!) while visiting some of his old haunts.
